Hair Things prt2

So, I promised to update you guys on my hair from the last post. Remember I took out my long twists, washed my hair and had it in mini twists, I took the twists out and got these really nice defined curls. Onyi called me a picture whore slut… but you know you love me :p

The first day I wore them out I just packed it up with a band. I love the curl definition!

The next day I used my afro pick to kinda fluff the hair at the roots so it looks fuller and I wore it out with a band as well. Look at the definition!!!!

Then I finally used a blow dryer to give it more body and it came out like this! I love it! This was the style I had in mind the day I decided to go natural and I can finally do it, hallelujah! And in April, it will be two years since I chopped it all off :)

This pic is from instagram…

Well, the next day was fine and dandy, till I stepped out of my house and it was what? RAINING… You already know how THAT goes… Frizzball! Ok it wasn’t that bad but it just became really puffy and looked fuller. It was annoying because I was on my was to an event on campus, a fashion show (expect a post on that). That’s how puffy it got, don’t know if you can see the difference tho.

That’s all folks!

Another NBS story: Girls will be Girls!!!

By Debbie Motilewa

So yeah, unlike the other stories here were ya’ll went to posh schools.. my school was razz.. lol! like absolutely razz.. but we all turned out okay, e.g Eki.. :p

Anyway, so I was in Chrisland for my junior days, then  I moved schools for my SS1, then came back to Chrisland in my SS2.. So yeah, in a span of two days, the gist went round that “oh, there is this fit new babe in SS2, apparently she was here in her junior days” At this point, ya’ll should know that I was extremely shy in my junior days, so i’m too sure most people didn’t know me.. Anyway, so guys, bn guys all wanted to know this “fit babe” lol even the ones that had babes ohh. you know the way people love new things, not because they are better, but just because they are “new”

So yeah, the babes of these guys started vexing ohh, like ahn han, from where to where now? so I had a number of enemies, what they didn’t realize was that it was just a phase their guys were going through.. Anyway, so we usually had this thing we called “christmas party” it’s just socials but with food.. Okay, I can’t remember if it was christmas party or Easter or Sallah party, I just know we had food and we did it on the basketball court *I know.. razz ey?* Told ya my school was far from posh :(

So there was this babe in my set, let’s call her purple, Purple had this dude she wasn’t officially in a relationship with who was also on my case.. So yeah, purple’s soon to be boyfriend and I had bn talking for a while, I may have had little feelings for him, but as part of the “sister code” I always tried to brush him off,.. So yeah, on this social’s night, Purple made a deal for nutri-c with her friend that she wasn’t gonna dance… Nutri C is like a sachet juice…

So while we were all gisting beside the basketball court, watching our juniors shake the small bom bom they had, this dude in my set came to meet me and was like “aren’t you gonna dance” and stuff sha.. I didn’t know it was a planned entry, cos I had bn avoiding Purple’s bf all night cos I knew Purple was waiting for him to ask her to dance, just so she could tell him she can’t *I know:( sad things we used to do those days*

Anyway before I could say “Jack Daniel’s” two of my friend’s hi-jacked me, and carried me to meet Purple’s bf who was just at the opposite side of the basketball court… So yeah, we began talking… Remember purple had bn patiently waiting for him to talk to her all night? So yeah! Omo! that was how beef started.. soon a group of people gathered around purple, then I think she started crying or something… cos i was just getting some evil stares.. I was scared for my life that night o..

I sha told purple’s bf I had to go…

Anyway, the next day was a Sunday, Purple was still giving me attitude sha… Feeling like a peace maker that I used to be in those days, I now really went to her room to talk about it.. lol! this babe still gave me attitude sha…

Can’t really remember how the conversation went, but I know we didn’t talk for a while, I think we started talking like couple of weeks later…

…If the Ore Meji girls permit me, I have another similar story to share :) more like the concluding part of this story…

I am sorry for the really long story :( but I am bad at writing short stories..

Meet Toyin Jolapamo

Describe your Style and what Style means to you.
My style, I like to think is easy and pulled together and I’m a risk taker. In my opinion, style is about expressing yourself in what you wear, and at the same time knowing what’s best for you.

Tell us about a few of your favorite things
My heeled Doc Martens, its funny how those shoes can transform any outfit. Riding pants, and plain black leggings.

Favourite Place to shop and why?
Topshop & Zara all the way. Topshop is soo me, its ridic. They carry so many different styles. From chic, to vintage, to classy, to casual, topshop has it all. However, my shirts and blazers- Zara.

Style Inspirations/Icons
Olivia Palermo, Rihanna & Alexa Chung

One Secret/advice to others on style & looking good
NEVER TRY TOO HARD! Don’t pull a Nicki and look like a stupid hoe!

Ultimate Fashion DO and Don’t
Do take risks. That’s what fashion and style is about. Try new things but Don’t end up looking like a circus clown. In the end, it’s all about looking effortlessly good.

Hair Things!

Well due to popular demand… We have decided to do a hair post!

We’ve been featured on the O’Naturals blog (Eki & Tiwa)

Eki’s 2 cents:
You might also want to check Kim Love on KimmayTube and educate yourself.
You can find a video on how I wash my hair here
I use a lot of coconut oil, here’s a video on it and it’s importance from Miss V Charles on youtube.
Click here for helpful tips on perfecting you braid out or twist out
I don’t really do much to my hair, it’s always in protective styling most of the time. When I take it out I use my glycerin, water and olive oil mix to detangle, put it in sections and wash it with organix coconut milk shampoo and conditioner/hello hydration conditioner by garnier. I re-twist it with any leave in conditioner and moisturizer (or shea butter/shea butter mix) and let it air dry so I can have a twist out style later. When taking down my twists I do it with a bit of coconut oil (just enough to avoid frizz and drench every where my hair touches in coconut oil lol). I use jojoba oil or coconut oil on my scalp every now and then (mostly to avoid dandruff, cuz I tend to have a lot after I take out my protective styles like braids, twists or weaves).
The styles I do with my hair (that you’ve probably seen pictures of on the blog) include mini twists, dry and wet twist outs, the classic afro and sometimes a puff, when I want the less in-your-face look. My mummy said my hair always announces my arrival before I enter a room… lol, she wanted me to tone it down a bit.
I’m pretty simple when it comes to my hair, I try not to stress it so it doesn’t stress me.
I just recently took out my twists, had them in for 2 months and that’s the longest I’ve had them in for. They still looked pretty good when I was taking them out and I Looooooved the color but it was time for it to go, my scalp started hurting and I was scared of all the hair on my hairline falling out. It’s in mini twists now so I’ll update you on how they turn out.

Tiwa’s 2 (or 3 or 4 or 5) cents:

So I really don’t have a fixed routine when it comes to my hair because quite frankly, I don’t see that much of it. 80% of the time, it’s in braids, therefore every time I wear it out, I tend try new products and techniques. I recently just took out my yarn braids, and I honestly thought I could hear angels singing as they were falling off my head. I had had these braids in since December last year… bear in mind we’re now in March. Before you judge me, let me just explain that….

Okay. I was about to try and think up an excuse but I’ve decided to tell the truth and let the devil be ashamed. In all honestly, I really just got lazy and had no time to fiddle with my hair for the last 3 months lol.

Anyhoo: these are some (not-so-excellent) pictures of what my braids looked like: Personally, I really hate taking out hair, so the entire process took me about 5 hours, 2 of which were spent complaining and sulking about how I hate taking out hair, another 2 of which involved the actual act of me taking out my hair, and the last of which involved me throwing a tantrum (there may or many not have been tears). This is what my scalp looked like when I was about halfway done:

And this is what my face looked like:

Clearly, I was NOT impressed.

Eventually, I reached the light at the end of the tunnel and ended up with 3 puff puffs on my head:

At this point, I was very tempted to just call it a day and go to bed like this… but then I remembered I had church the next morning, and did not want to walk in there looking like a poodle. After all, I never know where my future husband may be lurking.. (*ahem* This is not a sub).

Now, usually when I wear my hair out, I leave it in it’s natural afro-ish state. But this time, I wanted to straighten it out, just to see how much it had grown and what other styles I could experiment with. I was a bit apprehensive when looking for what products to buy, because I needed something strong. My hair is color treated, and putting heat on top of that may cause damage, so I wanted to protect it properly. While washing and conditioning, I used mainly heat treatment products. This is a picture of the heat protectant I used:

I was a bit skeptical because most heat products are meant to be left in the hair during the heating process, but this one needs to be rinsed out. But I was too lazy to go back to the store and get something else, so I decided to take my chances. After washing and conditioning, my hair was reduced to it’s TWA state:

At this point, my sister decided to dent my self esteem by telling me I bear a striking resemblance to Wanda Sykes. If that name doesnt ring a bell, this is what she looks like:

Next, I decided to straighten it. It’s really hard to go from one extreme to the other (TWA to straight hair), so I decided to take some baby steps and blow it out first:

I put some raw shea butter, olive oil moisturizer and hair polish in it. And then I began straightening:

And the finished product:

Granted, I sleep like a drunk cow and when I woke up the next morning, my hair looked nothing like this. But it was still straight and it looked pretty good. So this is what I’m working with at the moment. I’m not sure how long it’ll last, but I’m hoping I can maintain it by straightening every two weeks, and blow drying when I need to.

*****UPDATE******

I thought I’d show you what my hair looks like, two days later. I’m supposed to have been sleeping with it in a scarf, but….yeah… didn’t happen lol. Regardless, I think it’s been holding up pretty well:

Another NBS Exprience

By Amara

I read the entry and watched the video on your blog post back in December 2011 on Nigerian Boarding Houses. I must say that I really enjoyed that entry—it was hilarious. It also made me nostalgic. The video made me realize that every student that went to a Nigerian Boarding School has a story to tell. And I happen to be one of them. So I have decided to chip in my own two kobo. Here it goes:

It was a typical hot Wednesday afternoon. The day had been pretty uneventful and long. The air was dry and hot, no breeze. We had English class for our last period and we had to answer some ridiculous questions in our textbook about a boy who ate an orange from a tree that belonged to his neighbor but extended its branches into his yard. To worsen it all, I had sweeping duty that day. That meant that after classes ended for the day, it was my job (along with one other person) to place the seats on top of the desks and sweep our dusty class. Yay. It took us about 20 minutes to finish our duty and by the time we were done, I was dripping with sweat. (I forget to mention we did not have air conditioners in our classrooms.) By the time we arrived at the hostel the doors were locked. Yes, locked. Mind you, this was around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. We had to explain why we were late and get a letter of confirmation that we swept the class before we could enter the hostel for siesta (nap time). Needless to say, I was pissed.

As my friend and I waited in front of the hostel door (along with a few other girls), a girl who was one year my senior came bustling through like she owned the place. She tried to push past me but I wouldn’t let her. I was upset. Why was she pushing me? What happened to the words “excuse me”? Why could she not wait patiently in line like the rest of us?

When she realized I would not let her through, the conversation went something like this

Senior Girl: “What’s wrong with you? Move!”

Me: “There is nothing wrong with me.”

Senior Girl: “Are you talking to me like that?”

Me: “We all have been waiting here; you can’t just come and push people.”

Senior Girl: fuming in the face “You will see what I will do to you!”

Me: “What? Go and cast to your mates?” (The word “cast” here means tattle tell.)

Senior Girl: looks away quickly and walks hastily toward hostel doors.

I knew I was going to be “in trouble” with her mates but I didn’t care. I was tired, sweaty, and upset. That was not a day for me to sit back and allow injustice and stupidity to reign. The situation was nowhere near that of what happened with Rosa Parks, but it did feel like I had won a small battle. (Mind you, there were juniors there too (mine and hers), so she was really embarrassed. I was content with that.)

My friend and I left shortly after the incident to go and retrieve the note from our teacher to confirm that we did, indeed, sweep that blessed classroom. We didn’t talk about the incident.

Later that day, I was told to go and apologize to the aforementioned Senior Girl in her room. As I walked in, one of her busybody classmates announced my arrival in hopes of instigating some type of beat down. Fortunately for me, no one seemed to care. I apologized and went on my way. At supper, I was summoned to a table full of Senior Girl’s peers. They asked me if what Senior Girl told them was true. I concurred. I think they asked why I acted the way I did but I can’t remember my response. I was asked to “pack their table” that night. (“Packing tables” means that you clear the plates, pots, pans and wipe down the table.) That was it.

To be honest, I don’t regret that incident. She was not the most polite junior to her seniors so I guess I gave her a dose of her own medicine. C’est la vie.
